Dogs and cats have a much shorter digestive tract and higher levels of acidity in their digestive system and stomachs than humans. Their bodies naturally neutralize the bacteria that might be on the surface of raw meat. Rebel Raw uses only human grade ingredients, in a human grade, FDA commercial food kitchen. All of our food products meet the FDA’s bacteria and virus testing criteria.

Cats’ and dogs’ stomachs are equipped to handle bacteria in much the same fashion as wolves who regularly eat days old carrion without getting sick. Since their digestive tracts are shorter and much more acidic than ours, their risk for bacterial illnesses is low. Salmonella can only survive in higher pH conditions (4-8+) and requires at least 12 hours to reach incubation. The hydrochloric acid in a carnivore’s stomach is a protective enzyme against pathogens. Their stomach is highly acidic (about a pH 1) while their digestive system is short and lacks complexity. Bacteria is killed when ingested and passed within 4-6 hours as waste.

Follow the same safe handling procedures you use when preparing your own meals that have raw ingredients. Wash all surfaces, utensils and hands thoroughly with hot, soapy water after they come in contact with raw products. Keep raw products frozen until you are ready to thaw and serve them. Once raw products are completely thawed they should be kept refrigerated (<42°F) and consumed within 4 days. Using common sense and following safe handling practices and good hygiene are the best defenses for keeping both humans and pets in the household healthy and happy.
